This month, DCM Communications celebrates a major milestone: 10 years in business! As I reflect on this journey, I find myself going back to the very beginning—back to the spark that ignited my passion for the live events industry and ultimately inspired me to build this company.

My First Foray into the Events World

In 2007, I had just graduated college and landed my first job as Assistant Editor at BizBash Florida. It was a role I was eager to dive into, even though I didn’t know much about events at the time. What I did bring to the table was:

A strong background in journalism and editorial design
A knack for talking to strangers (a helpful skill for interviews!)
Ambition, drive, and an insatiable work ethic

Those traits helped me hit the ground running, and it wasn’t long before I found myself promoted to Editor (but that’s a story for another day).

In those early days, I did everything I could to understand “the event industry.” I even read every back issue of the magazine. Then came the pivotal moment: my very first industry event.

An Evening That Changed Everything

The event was hosted and produced by none other than the legendary Barton G. at the historic Moore Building in Miami’s Design District, the up-and-coming area at the time.

That night – the food, the lighting, the entertainment, the production, the people – I fell in love with it all!

The Spark That Lit the Flame

That event lit a spark that soon became an eternal flame of admiration, respect, and excitement for the live events industry…

…the industry I chose for DCM to focus on serving when I launched this company in 2014, and continue to serve today with great joy.

Catch Part 2 of the series here.
